Through the polite applause
I step onto the stage.

Thank you, I say.
Thank you all for being here.

I can’t see anyone:
the overhead light blinds me.

I begin reading.
The character in my poem

sounds like me
and not like me.

Here
and not here

I’m someone else—
almost.

Au milieu des applaudissements polis
j’entre en scène.

Je dis Merci.
Je vous remercie d’être venus.

Je ne vois personne
l’éclairage m’aveugle.

Je commence à lire.
Le personnage dans mon poème

parle à la fois comme moi
et pas comme moi.

Ici
et ailleurs

Je  suis quelqu’un d’autre—
presque.
