The Poet Laureate of Jones Street

It is always scoreless,
the bottom of the ninth

bases loaded
two strikes, two out.

Naturally, I must play
all  positions.

On the mound, I adjust my cap
slowly wind up.

At the plate, I lean forward
squeezing the bat

I pitch. I swing.
Pop-fly to left.

Searching the sky
I run in slow motion, almost dancing

my hand outstretched
a perfect catch.

C’est toujours match nul
le dernier tour de batte

toutes les bases, occupées
deux frappes, deux éliminés.

Naturellement, je dois jouer
toutes les positions.

Au marbre, j’ajuste ma casquette
et  je prépare à lancer.

Comme le batteur, je me penche
en serrant la batte.

Je lance. Je swingue.
Une grande chandelle à gauche.

Visant le ciel
je cours lentement, dansant presque

mon gant tendu
une parfaite prise.
