Silent Onions

Such good citizens
in their basket of cane
woven tight

these bumpkins
full-blown, uprooted
tearful and bald

but so well-behaved
in their  thin white aprons
below a harsh light

some waiting alone
some gently touching
the slicing knife.

Oignons Silencieux

Quels bons citoyens
dans leurs panier d’osier
finement tressé

ces rustauds
épanouis, déracinés
éplorés et chauves

mais très sages
en leur mince tablier blanc
sous une lumière crue

les uns attendent seuls
les autres frôlent en douceur
le couteau à découper.
